About

The Secret Wednesday Choir formed in January 2025 and has been meeting weekly, singing together and having a lovely time. We sing a carefully selected mix of contemporary vocal music, influenced by the folk tradition and with an emphasis on singing in our own voices. Everything we sing is a cappella, with no accompaniment or backing tracks. Just human voices, weaving together. If you're interested in singing with us, there’s no audition and you don’t have to read music. If you can hold a tune and you have a sense of rhythm, you’re welcome. Book a free taster session and see what you think.

When & Where

We meet Wednesdays 7-9pm at The Harbour. We follow the school term, breaking during school holidays. You don't need to wait for the start of a term to join us. More Details

Members gain access to audio of all the songs and their parts, as well as lyrics and scores. Whichever way you like to learn, we've got you covered. The sessions themselves, led by Neil Johnson, are designed to be fun, educational and rewarding. They include activities and tips to improve your voice and your musicality, with insights into anatomy and vocal health. We’re all trying to improve together, and the group is really supportive. If you want, there is opportunity to book additional 1-to-1 support. To ensure a good balance of sound, we try to keep all the different voice sections (soprano, alto, tenor & bass) equal in size. When applying, please be aware that this means there might be a waiting list for your preferred voice part, but don't let that put you off. As soon as there's a place, we'll be in touch. Also, it's totally fine to come for your free taster even if a space isn't immediately available. We're not what you might call a drop-in choir. We hope most people will be at most rehearsals, but we totally get that life gets in the way unexpectedly. Occasionally we'll Zoom an important rehearsal, so that anyone who needs to miss it can catch up.Your taster session is free. After that, the cost is £10 per session, payable termly. We have a bursary scheme
for under 25s which reduces the cost.
Regular singing has so many benefits for our health and wellbeing. These are well-documented, and everyone who regularly sings in groups just knows. Even after a full-on day, it's really uplifting and energising.
